Comparing Singapore Math to Saxon Math - Which One is Right For You?

The math wars of the 1990's have quieted down and are almost a thing of the past.

With the release of their 2006 guidelines, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (Nctm) effectively ended 17 years of promoting 'reform math' programs and acknowledged the need for schools to return to more former math programs.

Teachers and Home school parents can now move on to the next question. Which former math curriculum is best? The literal, acknowledge depends largely on the needs and preferences of each teacher and student.

Comparing Singapore Math to Saxon Math - Which One is Right For You?

There are many former math programs to choose from. This provides a brief chronicle of two of the most favorite programs, Singapore Math and Saxon Math. These two curriculum have some things in common:

- Both are used in social schools, incommunicable schools and home schools

- Both have clear track records of enhancing standardized test scores

- Both share the former math emphasis on math facts as the construction blocks of all math concepts

- Both have proven to be effective with a wide range of students

They also have some prominent differences:

Cost Comparison -Saxon Math books are more high-priced than Singapore Math books because Saxon has a lot more pages. Saxon student books are hard cover from 8th grade and up.

Saxon Emphasizes custom - Saxon Math puts more emphasis on doing custom exercises while Singapore Math puts more emphasis on critically reasoning through concepts. After concepts are introduced, Saxon moves immediately into custom exercises to help cement the opinion in the student's mind. Saxon requires students to memorize formulas, achieve fluent recall of math facts and apply algorithms to solve problems.

Singapore Emphasizes reasoning - Singapore teachers spend more time helping students to think through and verbally discuss each component of the concept. Singapore Math avoids belief on memorized formulas and algorithms so there is not as much emphasis on repetitive custom exercises. Instead, Singapore strives to give students an understanding of math concepts by walking students through each component of a problem, and then presenting them with the whole question to solve. This way, students are trained to think actively as they work through each step of a question instead of plugging the question into a formula.

Saxon is More Structured - Saxon Math is more structured, development it easier for teachers and students to succeed the roadmap. Each new opinion is followed by custom exercises. chronicle questions are provided after every 10 lessons.

Saxon is also a great option for U.S. School teachers looking for a program with a more customary approach. Saxon Math has proven success with a wide range of students, even turning struggling math students into math lovers!

11 activities to build math skills with art, games and books

Homeschoolers have a wonderful opportunity for the world in a way, sitting at a desk can never explore. A practical approach to mathematics helps a child learns not only the concept, but really understand.

In our house we have just started a new math skills: order. So, to prepare for these lessons, I planned a couple of art projects, some games and ordered a couple of really good books.

Here are the books, projects,and games that I used.

I've always enjoyed teaching the concepts with the history of mathematics. It 's something that triggers an understanding that you can have an experience in it. Maybe things word books better than me. Maybe it's the photo. Or maybe it's because the stories always have an influence on children. It is probably actually make the connection with the characters guys.

List of games:

Game # 1:

Do you have toys in various sizes. There are stuffed animals. Children put them in order from highest shorter and therefore the higher the shorter. Keywords: Short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller,higher.

Game # 2:

You must Devices (plastic plug or wooden blocks, stacking blocks will do). Create a series of towers where each tower is larger or smaller than the next. Children love to build stairs, this would also work. Keywords: Short, shorter, shortest, highest, higher, higher.

Game # 3:

You need to climb stairs. At each step, talking about how tall are you, and at the top, you're the higher. With each step down, talk about howmuch lower than it was, and basically, you're the lowest. Keywords: high, higher, higher, lower, lower, lower.

No Game 4:

Do you need more items from your pantry. I have a jar of peanut butter, a jar of peanuts, a container of hot chocolate mix, an empty cup, and a can of coffee. I took the elements that are heavier and lighter, which had no effect on the size of the weight. I had the children to them, by weight (estimated weight to pick it up). Keywords: hard, heavy,heavier, light, brighter, more brilliant.

Game # 5:

You need 6, Mason jars (or other glass that all have the same size), water and a metal spoon. Setting tone bottles with different amounts of water and then listen to the tone of each pot by placing a metal spoon. Point out that the lower the tone of the water level higher. Keywords: high, higher, higher, lower, lower, lower.

No Game 6:

Playing with stacking cups, stacking rings, nesting RussianDolls.

Art Project No. 1:

You will need glue, construction paper and twine. I cut the cord through customs (ie, 1 inch, 2 inch, 3 inches, etc.) until I was 8 strings for each child. The children put them in order of length and then a ruler to measure it. He then wrote the number of inches from each string and then the string glued to the paper. Keywords: short, shorter, shorter, longer, longer, longest.

Art Project # 2:

Youare markers, construction paper and different sizes of round coverage needs. Center of a cover in the middle of the page, trace with a marker. Continue to do this for all covers, so that the smallest circle in the middle of the largest circle. The child should be able to see the growing size of the circles. Art Project # 3:

She has designed various dimensions of the forms on paper, scissors, glue, andConstruction paper. Cut out shapes and glue them to construction paper size. Keywords: small, smaller, smallest, big, big, big, big, bigger, biggest.

Art Project # 4:

Need construction paper, scissors, glue and scraps of various forms. I recommend that the recesses have a different number for each form (ie, 1 circuit, 2 seats, 3 hearts, etc.) Draw a butterfly on a piece of construction paper are. This is the philosophy behind Elementary and Middle School Mathematics:  Teaching Developmentally.  John A. Van de Walle wrote this book to help students understand mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach the subject to children in kindergarten through eighth grade.  Although he could not have foreseen the changes in mathematics teaching over the last three decades, he was at the forefront of the movement towards a constructivist view of teaching, or teaching developmentally.  Constructivism says that children construct their own knowledge.  They are not blank slates waiting to absorb whatever the teacher tells them.  Teachers must understand both mathematics itself and how students learn mathematics in order to teach it effectively. 

 

Learning through problem solving is another major theme of this book.  Students solve problems not just to apply mathematics, but also to learn new mathematics.  Effective problems will take into account where students are, the problematic or engaging aspect of the problem must be due to the mathematics that the students are to learn and not be diluted by non-mathematical activities such as cutting or pasting, and the problem must require justifications and explanations for answers and methods.  Learning then becomes an outcome of the problem solving process. 

 

The book also addresses in more detail than any other book on the market the effect that the trends of standards-based education, increased pressure to test, and increased teacher accountability have had on teaching mathematics.  He addresses the 2000 NCTM Standards in depth, in Chapter 1 on Teaching Mathematics in the Era of the NCTM Standards, through the NCTM icon that appears in the margins throughout the text, and in two appendices in the back of the book.  Chapter 5 on Building Assessment into Instruction has also been heavily revised to focus on increased testing pressure, creating more explicit links between objectives and assessment, and including assessments for students with special needs. Additionally, samples of Pearson's reformed-based curricula, Connnected Math Project  (5-8) as well as Investigations (K-4),  are featured in the text and on the myeducationlab site.
